Papure is researching how paper packaging can be reliably sealed without adhesives. The project aims at sustainable and recyclable solutions that meet the increasing demands placed on packaging.
Paper already offers advantages over plastic: high recycling rates, lower CO₂ emissions, and reduced disposal costs. However, conventional sealing methods still rely on foreign materials such as plastics, coatings, or adhesives – a disadvantage for both production and recycling. Papure is therefore investigating new approaches that can do without such materials entirely.
Four Fraunhofer institutes are pooling their expertise for this purpose: Fraunhofer IVV in packaging development and joining technology, Fraunhofer IWS in laser-based surface modification, Fraunhofer IAP in material characterization and development, and Fraunhofer IWU in cognitive production. Together, they are developing innovative processes that make the future of adhesive-free paper packaging possible.
